ARTISTIC AND EPISTEMOLOGICAL PREMISE

Performance as Musical Knowledge

To approach performance as knowledge is not to claim that every artistic action automatically produces valid knowledge, nor to subordinate artistic practice to theoretical explanation. It is to recognize that musical understanding may be enacted, embodied, tested, and revised through procedures inseparable from doing.

Vocal knowledge is frequently procedural and tacit. A singer may know how to regulate breath, modify resonance, articulate a language, anticipate an ensemble entrance, adjust intonation, or respond to another voice without being able to state every operative principle. Such knowledge is situated because it depends on particular bodies, spaces, technologies, pedagogies, and histories. It is relational because it emerges among singers, conductors, listeners, scores, institutions, and acoustic environments. It is interpretative because performance requires judgment under conditions that cannot be fully predetermined.

A choir’s knowledge does not reside only in its members’ separate competencies. It emerges through relations of listening, alignment, correction, resistance, support, and collective memory. What appears as unity is continuously produced through coordination among differences; the choir is a dynamic musical and social formation.

This premise has methodological consequences. Rehearsal is understood not only as preparation, but as inquiry. Failed coordination may expose an assumption within a score or instruction. Vocal fatigue may reveal an unsustainable distribution of effort. Disagreement concerning pronunciation may disclose competing histories of language and authority. Spatial reconfiguration may reorganize listening and alter musical form.

The residency supports artistic development alongside clarification of the knowledge through which it proceeds. Participants examine how methods are learned, decisions authorized, materials transformed, and expertise articulated.
