GENEALOGIES AND FUTURES
The subtitle Genealogies and Futures defines the temporal orientation of the residency.
Genealogy is not understood as the recovery of a single, pure, or uninterrupted origin. Vocal and choral practices are formed through continuity and rupture, preservation and loss, migration and translation, institutionalization and marginalization, appropriation and transformation.
Genealogical inquiry asks how techniques, repertoires, classifications, vocal ideals, ensemble models, and forms of authority became possible. It may examine how institutions established standards of legitimate production, how recording altered expectations of precision and repeatability, how political or religious systems organized collective singing, and how some forms of expertise acquired recognition while others remained unnamed.
Futures does not designate prediction or stylistic progress. It identifies a field of possible transformation through new media, recovered histories, redistributed ensemble agency, sustainable rehearsal conditions, or new relations among voices, institutions, communities, and listeners.
The residency asks how inherited practices can be examined without being immobilized by history, and how experimentation can proceed without erasing its conditions of emergence. The capacity to imagine otherwise depends upon the precision with which present practice understands its inheritances.
